Such seems to have been the case with Diablo 2, as Blizzard was forced to take the servers offline entirely so that they could perform some emergency maintenance. Keeping a game running can be an incredible amount of trouble, and sometimes that trouble catches up to the point where it dominoes into an even bigger issue.
